I truly find it fascinating that visual interest can be found in every aspect of our lives. There is nothing that cannot be photogenic if given the chance. Laundry is a favorite of mine. Clean clothes smelling of your favorite fabric softener or the crisp outdoors is sensory beauty. The fresh feel of the fabric and knowing your closet now has more options are tactile and mental comfort. When I took this photo, it made me think that these orderly clothespins are a prefigurement of the potential orderliness of my clothes hanging neatly in my closet.
There is something archetypal about wooden clothespins, clutching onto freshly washed sheets as a gentle breeze billows and sways them like great sails on a ship. Movies have used this very scene to either give a sense of comfort, familiarity and a mid-west flavor of the 1950’s or this scene will be used to unsettle you by taking some iconic moment meant to represent security and turn it into some kind of foreboding omen. After all, color and music can set the emotional stage for any scene.
I had this photo put on canvas and hung it in my laundry room. Seems fitting. It reminds me I should be using the clothesline when the weather is nice. That clean scent of mountain air cannot be captured in a dryer sheet or a bottle. And the best part? — It’s free.
